Happy Granny Square Day 2019!
Yes apparently it is an actual day. Instagram is blowing up today with everybody showing their favourite Granny squares. I must admit i thought it was a bit silly at first, but actually its made me think more about this wonderful little crochet phenomenon that is the granny square.
It is always one of the first things you learn to make when you start crocheting. It can be simple but so effect. For a long time after i first learnt, i got fed up of granny squares and found them boring. But the more you explore the possibilities you discover they are more than just your collection of treble clusters.
I was gifted a book by Jan Eaton called 200 Crochet blocks. Its great to expand your dictionary of crochet squares and i have made some amazing blankets using the patterns from it. So thanks Jan! The blanket below is one i made for my Nan's 100th Birthday. She absolutely loved it!

So in celebration of Granny Square Day 2019... i have decided to share another FREE pattern with you. It is perfect for beginners! The Teddy Bear Lovey!
The blanket part of the lovey is a very simple Granny square design. You can change it up with your colour choices; i chose just a plain white with some grey rows for accents and although simple it does look very cute. The teddy bear head is fairly simple to make too. It would be a good introduction to amigurami if you've never done it before. It is easy to customize this pattern into other animals also. Perhaps cats, bunnys, foxes etc. Just change up the ears a bit and the embroidery of the features.
These loveys make wonderful gifts for new babies and can be so personal. Whenever i have gifted them they have been very much appreciated.
So here is the link to the pattern in my ravelry store. Dont forget it is free!
